What needs a connection
- The first model download, about 2.6 GB. It downloads over Wi-Fi only.
- Your own API key or Everglow Cloud, if you choose either. Both are remote processing.
- Optional iCloud backup.
What works without one
- Writing, editing and searching your entries.
- Asking your journal questions and chatting with the companion, using the on-device model.
- Browsing the people, places and timeline Everglow builds from your writing.
The trade-offs
On-device AI depends on your iPhone. It is slower than hosted AI and needs storage for the model, and availability and performance vary by device. You can switch engines in Settings at any time, or write without AI.
Does Everglow need the internet?
Only for the model download, a remote engine you choose, or backup. With on-device AI, your journal and its AI features work without a connection.
Is on-device AI as good as hosted AI?
It keeps your writing on your iPhone and works offline. Hosted AI is usually faster and handles longer, more detailed questions better.
